How to Display Your Collections
There’s just something about collections. Everyone has something that they love to collect! From vintage teacups and Staffordshire dogs to blue and white ceramics, they deserve to be shown off. And there’s no better way to infuse your personality into the design of your home than through displaying your collection. When arranged thoughtfully, every collection can look museum-worthy. Ahead, find our tips for planning and executing.
Group them together
Don’t make your guests tour your whole home to see your collection! Keep them together to make a statement. Sprinkling them around the house will make it look like your collection is the theme of your home (and no one wants a theme). Grouping them together means they’ll integrate a little easier into your home’s style, whatever it is, and giving it a dedicated home will spark conversation.
Keep them organized
As with all multiples, dumping your items all into a spot without thought will make it look more like a mess than a collection. Our suggestion is to pick a wall or a surface, like a shelf or fireplace, to place all of your objects. Like, all of them. Strategically choose where each item should go, and layer and stack them if possible to keep it looking unique. We absolutely love framing objects or keeping them in jars — it adds such personality. Consider organizing your items by color for an eye-catching look.
Make them accessible
If you’re displaying something like kitchenware that could be useful day-to-day, keep them on a lower shelf or make sure they can be taken off a hanger for a practical way to make the most of your collection.
Make the display part of the collection
Displaying your items on something unconventional, such as a step ladder or a bar cart, will add to the intrigue of your collection. There are very unique bookshelves, cabinets, and jars that can look just as cool as your collection. A scroll through Pinterest (our favorite pastime) can offer inspiration!
Anything can be a collection
Just because it’s not antique or expensive doesn’t mean it’s not a collection! It can be something small you pick up different places you’ve traveled, like mugs, or something you realize you simply have a lot of, like hats or spoons (we’re currently obsessed with hat walls)! Even if you don’t consider yourself a collector, chances are you’ve already got a collection of some kind.
Give it space to shine
Your collection is going to be busy and attention grabbing, so pick a place that is as empty as possible to display it. You don’t want it to get lost in clutter or overlooked. Try to position your collection in a well lit area to give it the full attention it deserves or consider lighting above it. Your collection deserves the spotlight!
